Equipping the Armor

Your Armor Identifies You

INTRO

Greetings, and welcome to — The Wisdom Crucible with Jakob McClain — where you and I engage in the ongoing practice of applying biblical thinking to deepen our understanding of biblical truth.

In this episode of wisdom forging We will consider the command in Ephesians 6 v. 10-18 which says —

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.

Amen.

This is a short reflection — not a detailed teaching — meant to remind us that God often multiplies what we simply release. That said, consider this.

CALL TO ACTION & WARNING

In traditional warfare, civilian casualties tend to be either collateral damage or intended to demoralize an army. They are not typically the primary concern of the enemy. The enemy’s weapons aim for the soldiers — the threat — who march out to face them.

When you don the armor of God, you guarantee that you will be identified by the enemy as a soldier of God. When you don the armor of God, you make yourself a target.

If you are missing a piece of your armor, you leave the part of you that it would have covered vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy. You don’t put on your boots and breastplate, but leave your belt and helmet. You don’t go into battle without your shield of faith and sword of The Spirit, lest the enemy find you unprepared and exposed.

You are inviting ruin upon yourself if you make the mistake of leaving behind any piece of your armor. One piece of armor is better than nothing, but it’s not nearly as effective as wearing the whole set.

Imagine the consequences of handicapping a soldier in such a way. In our case — in spiritual warfare — the consequences are not always physical injuries, although they can include wounds of the flesh. More concerningly, they are often wounds of the soul that cripple us in our mission — to shine light into the darkness, to evangelize, to disciple the fellowship.

For those written in the book of life, there is no need to worry about the conclusion of this war. Jesus proclaimed the work done — the war won. In the new creation, we will experience perfect peace, without the shadow of war darkening our days ever again.

But for now, we have to continue our march through the muck — until the race is won. God has provided for us a full set of armor that can protect us from the spiritual attacks of the enemy, and enable us to cut through the darkness that blinds the sheep and obscures the wolves in our midst.

For the armor to work, you must put on the whole armor of God — every, single, day. The day that you leave it off will be the day that the enemy takes you off the field. Do NOT give the enemy that opportunity.

Don the full armor of God, and protect God’s flock. Learn the armor like the back of your hand so that you can teach it to others — to multiply the faithful and to protect God’s people.
